Center for the Homeless | South Bend, IN

Homelessness

Students will get a chance to work directly with homeless individuals focused on building self-sufficiency. Volunteer work will include various activities around the shelter directed towards breaking the cycle of homelessness.

The Center for the Homeless is an amazing organization that is dedicated to breaking the cycle of homelessness. The center gives homeless families and individuals an opportunity to have another chance to rebuild structured and maintained lives that will develop self-sufficiency within the community. They achieve this by offering shelter and meals to the individuals during this process. Some of the center’s programs include: Adult Basic Education, Relationship Counseling, Mental Health and Substance Abuse Treatment, Peer Mentoring, Abuse Counseling, Debt Reconciliation and Budgeting.

Fowler Center | Mayville, Michigan

Disabilities

Students will have the opportunity to interact directly with the campers and be involved in projects to help campers to have a quality experience during the week.

The Fowler Center provides year-round outdoor recreational and educational experiences for people with special needs, including: mental and physical challenges, autism, traumatic brain injuries, as well as sensory and communication challenges. ASB participants will be able to interact directly with the campers that the Fowler Center provides services for during their involvement with the organization. Along with direct interaction, participants will be involved with projects that help to provide campers with a quality experience at the camp. In the past these volunteers have helped in areas such as: building challenge course low elements, painting cabins, building tack rooms at the horse ranch and planning programs for campers.

The Rise/Middle Way House | Bloomington, IN

Domestic Violence, Transitional Housing

Students will work in the women’s program support for domestic violence, child victims, and help with tutoring.

Middle Way House, Inc. is dedicated to program and services for women and children victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Volunteers will be working in the women’s support program and the children’s programs. Students will plan, organize and participate in activities for the women’s program on Tuesday evening. Students will also help with interpretation and translation of English if possible. The Rise is Middle Way House’s transitional housing/shelter. Volunteers will work in the food bank or with the children at the shelter providing a positive role model or childcare. Volunteers can also tutor both women and children.
