Fowler Center | Mayville, Michigan

Disabilities

Students will have the opportunity to interact directly with the campers and be involved in projects to help campers to have a quality experience during the week.

The Fowler Center provides year-round outdoor recreational and educational experiences for people with special needs, including: mental and physical challenges, autism, traumatic brain injuries, as well as sensory and communication challenges. ASB participants will be able to interact directly with the campers that the Fowler Center provides services for during their week-long involvement with the organization. Along with direct interaction, participants will be involved with projects that help to provide campers with a quality experience at the camp. In the past these volunteers have helped in areas such as: building challenge course low elements, painting cabins, building tack rooms at the horse ranch and planning programs for campers.

Indianapolis Peace Institute | Indianapolis, IN

Environmental Concerns

Students will work through this organization to promote peace in Indianapolis. There will be an anchor site where students perform service everyday, and then back at the house, different speakers will come in to work with the group and speak about different aspects of environmental concerns.

Peacebuilding is a complex, multifaceted process of change, where the emphasis is on addressing the root causes of conflict within a given context, involving both conflict transformation and prevention. Peace is more than the absence of war, violence or conflict; its sustainability requires the creation of communities uninhibited by structural inequalities. Peacebuilding is practiced not only at an international level in war zones or in countries that are in the post-conflict process, but also at a local level, in our own communities. Students will focus on the environment within the Indianapolis community, and various aspects within this broad issue. There will be daily service at a host site, as well as speakers coming in from outside organizations to talk with volunteers.

La Casa de Goshen | Goshen, IN

Community Development

Volunteers will have the opportunity to directly help families in need by completing various construction projects within their homes.

La Casa Goshen is dedicated to helping disadvantaged families in the community through housing and community development. La Casa values family as the basis for society and works to assure that all families have a place to grow. Volunteers will be directly helping families in need by doing various construction projects in the houses of families in need. La Casa works to help families in need and get them from crisis to success.

Operation Breakthrough | Kansas City, MO

Youth and Education

Students will be working directly with the children in and out of the classroom and serve as a positive role model to the students.

At the Operation Breakthrough Center in urban Kansas City, students will be involved in programs with children ranging in age from 6 weeks to 18 years. Volunteers can expect to help teachers out in the classroom, spend time outside playing games, and serving as a positive role model to the children. Operation Breakthrough is an Early Childhood Education and Before- and After-School Care Center located downtown. Their mission is to help children who are living in poverty develop to their fullest potential by providing them a safe, loving and educational environment.
